What is Thermography?

The Offical Definition of Thermography is

"Infrared thermography is the science of acquistion and analysis of thermal information from non-contact thermal imaging devices"

Thermography is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement camera to "see" and "measure " thermal energy emitted from an object.

Thermal or infrared energy is light that is not visible because its wavelength is too long to be detected by the human eye; it's the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we perceive as heat. Unlike visible light, in the infrared world, everything with a temperature above absolute zero emits heat. Even very cold objects, like ice cubes, emit infrared. The higher the object's temperature, the greater the IR radiation emitted. Infrared thermography allows us to see what our eyes cannot.

Infrared thermography cameras produce images of invisible infrared or "heat" radiation and provide precise non-contact temperature measurement capabilities. Nearly everything gets hot before it fails, making infrared cameras extremely cost-effective, valuable diagnostic tools in many diverse applications. And as industry strives to improve manufacturing efficiencies, manage energy, improve product quality, and enhance worker safety, new applications for infrared cameras continually emerge.

Heating your home in the winter is probably one of your household’s largest bills. Properties with poor insulation will cost more to heat. Thermal imaging is an excellent tool to identify areas of your home where valuable warm air is escaping or unwanted cold air is creeping in.

Home information packs or HIPS's as they are known are now law requiring anyone wishing to sell a property. These packs are required to contain information about the thermal efficiency of your house known as the Energy Performance Cerificate. This information is determined using standard factors and only serves as a visual inspction, therefore is not particularly accurate. In an increasingly difficult property market why not enhance you chance of selling your property by having a survey of the real energy efficiency of your home.
